My Goal

When you see the word cheerleading, what comes to your mind? Is it pretty girls, in teeny tiny uniforms, screaming rah rah at a football game? You're probably thinking duh thats exactly it, why are you asking me this? Well...you're wrong! The cheerleading that I will be talking about in this blog is going to be the competitive kind. I have a poll asking if you think cheerleading is a sport and most of you I already know will say no. Yes, it is a sport. My goal for this blog is to change my readers ideas of cheerleading. After reading some of my posts, I want my readers to appreciate what the world of cheerleading is really about. It takes hard work, sweat and tears just like any other sport, if not more. I want to know why everyone thinks cheerleading isn't a sport. I take offense to anyone saying it's not a sport. Personally, I think if you say it's not a sport it's because you have no knowledge. No knowledge of what the sport takes, and what it takes to be successful at it.
Check out this video! They are the WORLD winning team this year. You cannot say cheerleading is not a sport after seeing this video. It takes so much practice and skill to look this great. Give me your feedback.

  1. I understand where you are coming from. I dance competitively and people are always telling me that it is not a sport, just a hobbie. The definition of a sport is a physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. How are dance and cheerleading not considered sports? I don't know much about cheerleading, but I can tell people are going to learn a lot from your blog.

  2. Hello, I watched your video and my thoughts are that it was a wonderful (athletic) performance. But I consider it to be that: a performance, not a sport. During the video I witnessed an amazing show, much like those a drama play, circus act, or marching band presentation can pull off. I’m aware that the people performing the show had outstanding athletic capabilities, much greater than my own. Nevertheless I do not view it as a sport.
My opinion is that you should be able to play a sport without the need of a judge, only the competitors, and come up with a winner. You cannot do so with cheerleading. This opinion might be wrong or it could be right, nevertheless you asked for an opinion and this is it.
P.S. It takes practice and skill to do many things that aren’t sport such as painting, singing, solving the Rubik’s cube with your eyes closed, or playing an instrument. And next time you ask for an opinion you shouldn’t ridicule everyone on the other side of the argument.

  3. I completely agree with you in that cheerleading is a sport, and it is underestimated constantly by society. Competitive cheerleading included, they should be recognized as sports and no longer ridiculed by others. To the contrary, everyone has their own opinion and you did mention that you respect people who think otherwise, which is morally right. I do have to agree with you 100% though that competitive cheerleading should demand the recognition it deserves as a sport, but society as a whole will always formulate their own separate beliefs regarding topics such as these. Whether they agree with your opinion or not is their own choice, but I, on one hand, do agree so.

  4. Even though I have never cheered before, I think cheerleading is a sport because I do believe it takes a lot of dedication and athleticism to pull off correctly. I also think it takes a lot of courage to fly through the air the way you do. Cheerleaders have exceptional strength to do the stunts that they do and I completely agree that it is a sport.

  5. Well I must say your moves are amazing! I actually went to one of my neighbors cheer practices and was soo amazed at what they were capable of doing! If there was one thing that I wish I could do it would have to be to be able to do all of the stunts that cheerleaders do.
I completely disagree with Carnmela's point of view. I think that cheerleading is a sport but it takes much more talent than any other sports. If you actually take a close look at other sports there is some form of a judge in all of them. For example in football, basketball and soccer there are referee's which in a sense are judges because they "judge" whether the players are playing the game correct. If we didnt have referee's then no one would ever know who won the games. Right? I dont think that cheerleading is any where close to a circus act or drama play. Both of those things require little effort and skill to be done.

  6. Thank you Ashli! I afree with you and your point of view on areeing with me haha! I did ask for Carmelas opinion and I am and was open to anyones opinion I just think her comment was a bit harsh.
Yes! There are judges in those sports your right! I never really looked at it that way but yes you are correct. I love your argument here and its highly appreciated!
And thanks for looking at the sport in a open mind, yeah it may be a performance but your right it does take more effort and a WHOLE LOT more skill. :)

  7. WELL, I completely believe cheerleading is a sport-(Only guy to say this so far. Woo) As a child, I grew up with 4 sisters, in which they all performed cheerleading! So while growing up I was able to witness all the hard work and time they put into this, as well as injuries that they might have acquired. Which I believe helped me accept cheerleading as a sport, I agree with the fact that people saying it isn't a sport is because they have no knowledge of it. If they were able to see or even attempt to do these incredible things, they would quickly be proved wrong.
